Summer of innovation: Inside SemiQon’s thriving internship program

This summer, SemiQon welcomed a bright trio of trainees eager to delve into the exciting world of a quantum technology startup. Their experiences offer a glimpse into the unique culture at SemiQon—a place where innovation, trust, and collaboration intertwine seamlessly.

The journey of our summer trainees has been both a learning experience and a contribution to the groundbreaking projects at SemiQon. What drives these young innovators, and how has their time at SemiQon shaped their career aspirations? 

Discovering SemiQon: where ambition meets collaborative culture

The decision to join SemiQon for Iago Rossetto, Unna Arpiainen, and Viktor Heino stemmed from a confluence of factors. All three were drawn to the company's cutting-edge work in quantum computing, but it was SemiQon's supportive atmosphere that truly sealed the deal.

"Applying to SemiQon was a no-brainer for me. I simply loved the idea that I could have a part in advancing the field."

Iago was impressed by the trust placed in interns, alongside with the vast opportunities to explore the field of semiconductor quantum dots. "The internal support, combined with the wide physics sandbox was truly unique and exciting," he shares.

Unna was drawn to  the company’s culture. "SemiQon was an interesting company career-wise, and they seemed to have a warm, close-knit atmosphere in the team," she reflects. Unna appreciated the way tasks were tailored to individual strengths and interests, allowing her to work on a wide variety of tasks while fully integrating into the team. 

For Viktor, the fascination with quantum technology made SemiQon an obvious choice. The smaller size of the company also appealed to him, as it meant taking on more responsibility and engaging in meaningful work. "Applying to SemiQon was a no-brainer for me," Viktor says. "I simply loved the idea that I could have a part in advancing the field."

From expectations to everyday breakthroughs

The trainees entered their internships with clear goals, eager to gain hands-on experience and expand their knowledge. 

"Working in R&D for a company was a new experience for me, pushing me to grow outside my comfort zone."

Iago, seeking to mature as a physicist and engineer, found the shift from academia to industry a positive challenge. "Working in R&D for a company was a new experience for me, pushing me to grow outside my comfort zone. It required a deeper sense of ownership but also provided access to plenty of resources" he notes.

Unna aimed to gain practical experience directly connected to her studies. The tasks at SemiQon combined well with her previous experience, exceeding her expectations and enhancing her skills.

Viktor's primary expectation was to understand how a quantum technology company operates on a day-to-day basis. The internship provided him with valuable insights into the innovation process. "From the outside, it often looks like a black box that magically ships an end product,” Viktor explains. “This internship allowed me to see how breakthroughs are made, bit by bit, every single day," Viktor explains.

Growth and lasting Impact

The experiences at SemiQon have left a lasting impact on the trio, shaping their career aspirations and equipping them with valuable future skills. 

"SemiQon has shown a great example of the kind of workplace I aspire to be part of."

Iago felt privileged to be part of the project from its early stages. “Solid-state physics is a fascinating interface of quantum mechanics with mesoscopic and larger systems. Learning by doing it was a rich experience.” At SemiQon he also learned plenty about project management, balancing internal tasks and communication with other teams.

Viktor believes that his internship at SemiQon has provided a strong foundation for his career. "This place has not only improved my resume but also taught me extremely valuable skills that I will undoubtedly use in the future," he concludes.

Unna's time at SemiQon has set a high bar for what she hopes to find in her future career. The supportive environment and the opportunity to face new challenges have given her a clearer vision of what to look for in future roles. "SemiQon has shown a great example of the kind of workplace I aspire to be part of," she reflects.
